The Best American Golf Tournaments – Part 2

Once again, we step up to the tee to find the best American golf tournaments that are currently competed for. In part one we looked at the U.S Masters, the U.S Open, and the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. In this blog we look at even more challenging tournaments that include, the Players Championship, the Farmers Insurance Open, and the AT&T National.

The Players Championship

This tournament is one of the most coveted titles on the PGA Tour. Dominated by the great Jack Niclaus in its early years the Players Championship has grown and grown in importance.

It all takes place at Sawgrass in Florida at the TPC (Tournament Players Club) which opened in 1980. The famous Stadium Course has a capacity for thirty-six thousand spectators which makes it ideal to host such as prestigious tournament. And the course has been made famous by featuring in the series of video games endorsed by Tiger Woods. And the course is home to one of the hardest and most recognizable holes in modern golf, the par-three Island Green.

Farmers Insurance Open

The Pacific Ocean dominates the Torrey Pines two courses notably the North and the South. And players that come for an easy round of golf are certainly surprised by the problems and difficulties that arise from these challenging courses.

Some of the holes are actually set upon the cliffs looking down at the ocean below. Perhaps the best views can be obtained on the South Course which has to be America’s best municipal course. Many players in this tournament flounder at the very last, when they have to make a decision at the 18th hole to go for the green in two shots or lay short.

The AT&T National

There is some doubt if the AT&T National tournament will take place once again at the Congressional Country Club which it has done for five out of the last seven years. Many club members have complained that the tournament disrupts the club too much, and the one hundred and fifty thousand fans that descend on the golf club during the tournament certainly brings a little life to proceedings.

The tournament is held on the Fouth of July each year and is spearheaded by Tiger Woods who always insists that there is a military theme to the event. Being so close to Washington there is a very patriotic feel to this tournament and it is highly regarded as one of the best tournaments in America.

Hyundai Tournament of Champions

Our last impressive golf tournament has to be the Tournament of Champions that takes place in Kapalua in Hawaii. It is the first big tournament to be played on the PGA Tour every year, but that is about to change as the golf season is shifting a little.

The famous Plantation Course is really challenging with a good proportion of the course being on hills. Wide fairways also dominate, so it is possible for some very low scores and makes for a very close competition. Birdies and Eagles are common during this tournament which all adds to some very enjoyable watching. There is no doubt that America hosts some of the greatest tournaments in world golf, and these are some of the very best.
